Castrignano del Capo
historical information:
The feast recalls the miracle of April 13 performed by the Madonna di Leuca in favor of the inhabitants of Leuca.
The chronicles of the time and precisely of the 365 A.D. narrate that a devastating tidal wave was crashing down all over the Capo di Leuca. The storm was endangering the lives of many fishermen who went out to sea in small boats. The fear among the people was that grave that altogether they felt the need to persistently ask the intervention of the Virgin Mary to save them from the disaster. The Virgin Mary was moved to pity and soon calmed the waters saving the men and things from the disaster. It was on April 13 365.
Since then the people, every year on that day, went on a pilgrimage on foot to Leuca from all neighboring towns to thank the Virgin Mary for the grace they received.
From then on, the Madonna di Leuca is considered the patron saint of fishermen.
