Chiesa di San Domenico (en)

The Baroque facade of San Domenico church, completed in the seventeenth century, has a portal surmounted by a statue of St. Dominic de Guzman, and the busts of St. Peter and St. Paul. The top of the pediment is decorated with statues of saints valued in the Dominican Order.   The interior, with a single nave, is illuminated by 13 window lyre, and has seven chapels alternated with polychrome statues of Dominican saints. The transept is replaced by two large chapels that proceed to the main altar. Baroque altars and precious paintings decorate the church: artists like Saverio Lillo, Giovan Domenico Catalano, Giuseppe Zimbalo, and Gioacchino Toma worked on them.   Down the nave, the wooden choir is located, made in 1703 by Oronzo Pirti. The suspended wooden sky with the coat of arms of the Dominicans is captivating.

historical information:
The oldest information linked to the Convento dei domenicani in Tricase, entitled to Saints Peter and Paul, date back to the fifteenth century. According to folklore, it was built by Fr. Nicolò Paglia di Giovinazzo, devotee of Saint Dominic.   Between 1679 and 1688, the church was rebuilt with a new orientation, as indicated on the inscription on the facade, facing the square. Subsequently, the convent was rebuilt, wherein there once was a prestigious library and a renowned philosophy and theology post. However, Prince Gallone opposed, since the construction of the first floor of the convent, damages, in his point of view, the view of his palace on the square, and this slowed down, in 1736, the works.   The Dominicans were suppressed in 1809 and their properties were donated to the State. Therefore, the monastery, in 1813, served as a town hall.    Soon enough, the fairs that took place between June and August in the square outside the church, during the celebrations of Saints Peter, Paul and Dominic, were given great importance.   The church has been recognized as Monumento Nazionale dal Ministero dei Beni Culturali.
