Specchia di Pozzo Mauro (en)

Located on the highest point of the Serra of Pozzomauro, or the Pozzo Magno, from the homonymous medieval house destroyed, according to tradition, by a Saracen attack in the fifteenth century; the specchia seems to still want to play its role as a lookout of the territory although only a few ruins survived from its original structure.

historical information:
Cosimo De Giorgi, after analyzing some specchie, including that of Pozzomauro, compared them as similar constructions to the trulli and in a sense to the nuraghi of Sardinia, but used for defensive purposes. The exact dating of this, like all other large specchie, has been a source of controversy among historians and scholars who would place their origin in different periods of time, from the pre-Messapian period to the Norman period.
