Festa di San Vito Martire (en)
Festa di San Vito Martire (en)

The solemn civil and religious celebrations in honor of San Vito the Martyr, patron saint of Tricase, are held on the 9th, 10th and 11th of August. The traditional procession through the streets of the historic center, colored by the lights of the illuminations, is attended by a crowd of faithful; followed by, in Piazza Pisanelli, the fireworks display that illuminates the Palazzo Gallone and by the symbolic consigning of the city keys to the statue of the saint, which is returned into the church after the procession.
Tricase

bibliography:
Giuseppe Pisanelli, Notizie su uomini, cose ed immagini di Tricase, Edizioni Grifo 1990.

historical information:
Giuseppe Pisanelli, in his book 'Notizie su uomini, cose e immagini di Tricase', explains the origin of the Tricasi inhabitants’ devotion to San Vito Martire, citing the miraculous event that happened to archpriest Don Vincenzo Resci, parson of the city between 1771 and 1807. It is comprehended that the priest during a summer afternoon stroll through the streets of the town, was chased by several stray mad dogs. The priest, invoking San Vito, was able to find refuge in a small church where he was able to see that the beasts had become docile and tame. That day the archpriest, whose image is depicted on a painting of the altar of the parish church, convinced the community of Tricase to venerate San Vito.   The Chiesa di Roma, however, recognized San Vito as the patron saint of Tricase only from 13 April 1921, granting the request of the Bishop of Ugento, Luigi Pugliese.
