Torre della Madonna della Serra (en)

The tower dates back to the sixteenth century, a period of frequent Saracen attacks at the coasts of Salento. For this reason, the structure is characterized by the typical elements of the fortified structures; at the doors and windows are machicolations positioned for defensive purposes.
Madonna della Serra, Ruffano

current use:
Currently, after a careful restoration, the Tower of the Madonna della Serra is used as a Visit Center and classroom in the service of the Natural Park Bosco Occhiazzi-Madonna della Serra. Through educational tools and exhibition and with the intention of forming an innovative example of Natural Museum, it shows the wealth of biodiversity of the Mediterranean shrubbery. Exhibited inside the museum are dioramas of typical habitats of the nocturnal fauna of the Mediterranean shrubbery, dioramas of the burrows and nests, some reproductions of small animal occupants of rural uninhabited homesteads. There is an audio system for the reproduction of the sounds of nocturnal animals and adequate lighting system.

The Tower of the Madonna della Serra took its name from the hill that is part of the high grounds of the Serre Salentine. The greenery consists of a long, steep and precipitous promontory, parallel to the principal expansion of Supersano and Ruffano. It presents a terracing system, planted with olive trees, alternating with dry stone walls, pajare or little trulli-like structures and olive groves. The area is characterized by a pine forest of Aleppo pine (Pinus halepiensis), shrubby formation of Kermes thorny oak (Quercus calliprinos) and holm oak (Quercus ilex).
