The current facade of the church is the result of numerous successive remodeling until the 20th century. The interior, by contrast, is an explosion of Baroque art with beautiful altars with finely carved and twisted columns and paintings, as the seventeenth-century Vision of St. Francis by Frate Angelo da Copertino, adorning the great nave. The nave, along with the choir, are the result of a series of interventions that occurred at different times. The choir, in fact, destroyed in December 1931 by a fire, was restored only in 2004 with an opera of a Bolivian craftsman Giuseppe Valente of Miggiano. The church contains valuable Baroque altars made of Leccese stone dedicated to St. Nicholas (1653), the Crucifix (1683), the Immaculate Conception (1781) and San Vito (1807). The Leccese-stone statue of St. Nicholas has as its emblem the pastoral staff and three bags of coins in relation to the legend of a dowry granted to three young girls who would otherwise have been forced into prostitution by poverty. Also noticeable is the wooden crucifix by the sculptor Giuseppe Stuflesser of Ortisei, located in the center of the wall of the apse. Recognizable among the paintings in the church are the Risen Christ on the Sea of Galilee, The miracle of the loaves and fishes and The Marriage of Cana, all operas set in the typical landscape of Salento. Decorations and plasters of the vault in front of the presbytery are also of great importance,  built in 1704 by Cesare Penna Il Giovane. Another masterwork is the organ of 1628, by Giovanni Battista Olgiati from Como and Tommaso Mauro from Muro Leccese. Purchased at the behest of Don Francesco Maria Alamanni, the organ is located at the top along the left wall of the church; it has a rectangular case of carved and gilded wood surmounted by a broken pediment. Also present are the very elegant decorations consisting of geometric patterns, plant and figures of winged putti. Consisting of 393 metal pipes, all hand-hammered, it is the oldest working organ of Puglia and one of the oldest in Italy.

Savior until 1500, corresponds to the portion of the bay that actually precedes the main altar. In the night between 23rd and 24th of December 1931, a fire burned all the choir stalls and other furnishings therein. Following the collapse of the vault of the bay next to the old church, the vault was rebuilt, the new façade of the church was created in 1950 and the new bell tower was built in 1954.
