Tomba di don Tonino Bello (en)

Don Tonino Bello died in Molfetta in 1993. He was buried in his home town of Alessano, in the municipal cemetery. The tomb is a destination of pilgrims from various parts of Italy and they often leave a memory of their passage.
Asmall wall with a symbolic door was built around the tomb, symbolically oriented to the east, next to which is an inscription of the phrase: "Rise, builders of Peace!", reminiscent of the greeting used by Don Tonino to address the National Conference of Pax Christi.
Still around the tomb, stands an olive tree, a symbol of peace, on whose branches the pilgrims have hung rosaries, Franciscan Tau, miraculous medals, and more, as a sign of devotion, or to ask for intercession.

historical information:
Don Tonino was born in Alessano in 1935. After studying and having held various offices in the Salento, he was appointed bishop of the diocese of Molfetta, Giovinazzo, Terlizzi and then Ruvo. Since the beginning, his activity is characterized by renunciation of all he believed to be signs of power and a constant attention to the most needy: he promoted the establishment of Caritas groups in parishes and founded a community for the treatment of addicts. In 1985 he became the president of Pax Christi, the International Catholic Movement for Peace, demonstrating against the expansion of the military pole of Crotone and Gioia del Colle and especially against the military intervention of Italy in the Gulf War. He ensured critical and constructive presence in both ecclesiastical reality and tormented state of the country. After his death, he was awarded the National Prize for Culture of Peace and in 2007, the process of his beatification began.
