Laura Basiliana (en)

The Laura of Presicce is poorly preserved but like the others in southern Salento, it had to be composed of cells found in small crumblier rock-cut caves which was accessible from above through a cavity. Inside there was the "giacitoio", where the monks rested, and the crypt with frescoed wall designated for the celebration of the mass.

historical information:
The towns around Leuca, part of the Byzantine Empire, were the first to host the Basilian monks because the territories of Salento was easily spotted by the ships that took them to the peninsula. Some tangible signs of their presence are still present in these territories.

origin of place-name:
The term "laura" indicates a cluster of cells or caves of monks with a church and, at times, a dining hall in the middle. It is distinct on one side from the hermitages of the hermits and on the other side from the monasteries of the cenobites. The word has Greek origins and means "pass" or "ally".
